A 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded 45km from Samfya yesterday at 20:45 CAT. The tremors reached as far the Copperbelt. This region is no stranger to earthquakes. The current record surpasses in magnitude to last year which recorded a 4.1 9km depth in Mbala and a 4.5 15km depth. This is a heads up for the government to look at the frequency and escalating magnitude of this phenomenon.
Causes of the earthquakes in this region is because of the land formation and geological activities in the system of valleys called "The Great Rift Valley" which extends from Afar Junction in Ethiopia to Mozambique. This divergent trench which was formed millions of years ago is in the process of splitting Africa into two new plates.
Of the East Africa Valley The Western Rift, also called the Albertine Rift, includes many of the African Great Lakes, from Lake Malawi through Lake Tanganyika, Lake Kivu, Lake Edward, and Lake Albert. This is the region and system that often create the havoc in Northern, Luapula, Muchinga, Eastern and Copperbelt province
